Your First Massage: What to Expect, Step by Step
Booking your first massage can feel a little awkward. What do you wear? Will you be covered? What if it hurts? This guide walks you through the visit from booking to leaving, so you know exactly what will happen.
What Happens at a First Massage?
These are the questions we hear most at Zenora Massage Center in F-11 Markaz, Islamabad, and every one of them is fair. Here is a first massage in six short steps:
- You arrive a few minutes early and talk with your therapist.
- You say where you feel tension and how firm you like the pressure.
- You undress to your own comfort level while the therapist steps out.
- You lie under a towel. Only the area being worked on is uncovered.
- The therapist works, checks in and adjusts the pressure.
- You rest for a few minutes, then dress and leave.
Before You Book
Choose a massage that fits how you feel. You do not need to know the names. To relax, choose Swedish or aromatherapy. For stiff shoulders, try deep tissue. For a full reset, pick a full body massage.
Choose a sensible length. For most people, a 60-90 minute session gives the therapist time to talk with you and work properly. Ask us what we suggest.
Pick a calm time and avoid squeezing the visit between meetings. Check the basics: a clear address, clear prices and a clean, private space. See our massage prices.
Which Massage Should I Choose for My First Massage?
Not sure? Our guide to massage types explains them all, and your therapist can recommend one.
| If you… | Try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Want pure relaxation | Swedish massage | Gentle, flowing strokes |
| Want a complete reset | Full body massage | Covers the whole body |
| Feel stressed | Aromatherapy massage | Scented oils and slow strokes |
| Have stiff shoulders and back | Deep tissue massage | Slower, firmer work |
| Feel cold and tired | Hot stone massage | Warmth softens muscles |
| Like stretching | Thai massage | Active and rhythmic |
| Train often | Sports massage | Focused on active muscles |

What to Wear
Wear something simple and comfortable that is easy to remove. You get privacy to undress and a towel to cover yourself. Most people undress to their underwear, but you decide. If you prefer to keep more on, just tell your therapist. Some styles, such as Thai massage, are usually done in loose clothing.
Leave jewellery and valuables at home if you can, and bring comfortable clothes for afterwards.
Will I Be Covered?
Yes. This is the most common worry, and the answer is always the same. You are covered with a towel throughout. Your therapist uncovers only the part being worked on, such as an arm, a leg or your back, and covers it again before moving on.
Our treatments are therapeutic only. We do not offer, and will not accept requests for, any inappropriate service.
What Happens Step by Step
- You arrive and settle in. Come five to ten minutes early and switch off your phone.
- You have a short chat about your goals, tension, injuries, medicines and anything to avoid.
- You get ready. The therapist leaves the room while you undress and lie under a towel.
- The massage begins with lighter strokes to warm the muscles.
- The pressure builds on the agreed areas, with regular checks.
- You can speak at any time. Say lighter, firmer or stop whenever you like.
- The session ends. You rest and dress in privacy.
- You get simple advice on water, rest and aftercare.
Let Us Recommend One
Tell us how you feel, and we will suggest a gentle start.
Does a Massage Hurt the First Time?
It should not hurt. You may feel pressure, and a firm massage can feel intense over tight spots, a kind of good ache. But sharp, burning or breath-holding pain is a signal to speak up. A good therapist wants your feedback, so tell them early and often.
Common First-Timer Worries
- I will feel embarrassed. So do most first-timers. The towel makes it easy to relax.
- I am ticklish. Say so, and your therapist will use firmer, steadier strokes.
- I might fall asleep. Many people do. It means you are relaxed.
- I do not know what to say. You can talk or stay quiet. Both are fine.
- I have a health condition. Tell your therapist and, if needed, your doctor first.
How Should I Prepare?
- Eat lightly one to two hours beforehand.
- Drink water and avoid alcohol.
- Shower if you can, especially after exercise.
- Note any areas of concern so you remember to mention them.
- Arrive on time, so your session gets its full length.
Book a Calm First Visit

Who Should Check With a Doctor First?
Please speak to your doctor before your first visit if you are pregnant, have a blood clot or clotting condition, take blood-thinning medicine, have a fever or infection, have a recent injury, fracture or surgery, or have severe back pain with numbness or weakness. Massage supports relaxation and comfort. It does not diagnose or cure any condition.
What to Do Afterwards
Take a few minutes before you leave. Drink water, eat something light and avoid hard exercise for the rest of the day. Mild tenderness after a firm massage is normal. Read our massage aftercare and safety guide for details.
